One of the suspected leaders of an international drug ring was extradited to the U.S. to face charges, the Justice Department announced Thursday.
Law enforcement officials arrested Waldemar Lorenzana-Cordon, 49, in Guatemala last year after he was indicted for a conspiracy to smuggle cocaine into the U.S.
According to the charges against him, Mr. Lorenzana-Cordon was a leader of his family’s Lorenzana drug-smuggling organization that took many tons of cocaine from Colombia and smuggled them into the U.S. and Mexico.
Mr. Lorenzana-Cordon arrived in the U.S. Wednesday, and a preliminary hearing was held the following day. A trial date has not been announced.
His father, Waldemar Lorenzana-Lima, pleaded guilty in August to similar drug smuggling charges.
