MONTICELLO, N.Y. (AP) - State lawmakers are hosting a forum looking for ways to combat the rise in heroin and opioid abuse in the state.

The group is meeting Friday in the Sullivan County Government center in Monticello. Lawmakers will be joined by Sullivan County officials as well as health and rehabilitation experts.

The Senate task force was created to study the problem of opiate abuse and recommend better treatment and eventually introduce legislation to combat addiction and problems associated with it.

Chair of the task force Sen. Phil Boyle, head of the Senate Committee on Alcoholism and Drug abuse, will be joined by Monticello Sen. John Bonacic.

The next form will be held May 15 in the city of Newburgh.
