LOS ANGELES (AP) - The former mayor of Hawthorne has pleaded guilty to a felony count of conflict of interest for falsely claiming he donated money to a police officer’s memorial fund.

Los Angeles County prosecutors say Daniel Juarez entered the plea Friday.

Juarez received $2,500 from a youth soccer group that was supposed to be donated to a memorial fund for a Hawthorne officer killed in a motorcycle crash.

Prosecutors say instead, Juarez spent the money on himself.

The judge ordered him to pay $2,000 to the memorial fund, $8,000 to the state’s victim restitution fund, and to complete 200 hours of community service.
