HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) - DeSoto County public school teachers, already looking forward to a $1,500 raise from the state July 1, are getting an additional $750 from local funds.
DeSoto County Schools is increasing the local supplement to restore earlier cuts when state money to the district was slashed during lean economic conditions in 2010.
The Commercial Appeal reports (https://bit.ly/RqcbpU ) the state and local increases collectively will boost starting teacher pay in DeSoto County Schools, the state’s largest district, to $36,371 annually for a teacher with no experience and a Bachelor’s degree. The top end of the scale for DeSoto teachers is $69,734 for a teacher with a Doctorate and 35 years or more of experience.
The DeSoto district, with more than 40 schools countywide, has about 2,100 teachers.
