ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The owner of an upstate fruit and vegetable farm has been confirmed by the state Senate as New York’s agriculture commissioner.
The Daily Gazette of Schenectady reports (https://bit.ly/1fTN0qY ) that Richard Ball’s confirmation as head of the Department of Agriculture and Markets was completed Tuesday by the Senate.
Ball had been serving as acting commissioner since January when he was nominated by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
He has owned and operated the 200-acre Schoharie (skoh-HAYR’-ee) Valley Farms in Schoharie County for two decades. Ball is a former board member of the New York Farm Bureau.
As commissioner, he’ll run an agency that promotes New York agriculture industry, oversees agriculture’s environmental impacts and safeguards the state’s food supply.
