HENRICO, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say a medical condition apparently caused a trooper to lose control of his patrol car and wreck on Interstate 295 in Henrico County.

State police spokeswoman Corinne Geller says 48-year-old Trooper R.L. Francis of Mechanicsville was attempting to stop a traffic violator when his car began traveling erratically. The car ran off the left side of the highway and then off the right side. The car then ran into trees.

A Henrico County police officer witnessed the accident. She found Francis unresponsive in the car.

Geller says Francis suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon near the I-295 and Interstate 95 split.

The investigation is continuing.
