PRESCOTT, Ariz. (AP) - Yavapai County supervisors say they want to ask voters in November to approve a tax increase to pay for building a new county jail in Prescott.
Supervisors Chairman Rowle Simmons says he wants the board to vote as soon as possible on a resolution to double the county jail district’s sales tax to a half-cent.
The county formerly had a jail in Prescott but the county a decade ago opened its current jail in Camp Verde. Sheriff Scott Mascher says that 600-ed facility is at capacity, and Prescott-area law enforcement agencies are burdened with the cost of transporting prisoners to the Verde Valley.
The Daily Courier (https://bit.ly/1kIsk2u ) reports that the new jail would house 300 prisoners.
The old jail in Prescott is now used for booking and transport.
