LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) - The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says a kayaker who died over the weekend in Calcasieu Parish has been identified as 24-year-old Zachary Collins of Silsbee, Texas.
Spokesman Adam Einck says a caller reported about 6 p.m. Saturday that an overturned kayak was floating off of the Interstate 10 beach on Lake Charles. The lake is on the Louisiana-Texas state line about 60 miles east of Silsbee.
Search crews learned that Collins had launched the kayak about a half-hour earlier.
Using side sonar, they found Collins’ body. Einck says he was not wearing a life vest.
He says investigators believe Collins drowned but did not have autopsy results when Collins’ identification was released Tuesday.
