FAYSTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police say a missing hiker in Fayston has been found dead in the backcountry off the Long Trail.

Police say the 22-year-old man left Monday for a three-to-five-day hike. Authorities say he called his father Monday night to say he was drenched from the rain and cold and missing a shoe.

Family members tried to locate him on the trail but were unable to make contact. Vermont State Police were called Tuesday morning.

Police say rescue crews went into the area where the hiker was last seen at about 12:30 p.m. but encountered difficult conditions with deep snow. The body of the hiker was found by a Vermont National Guard helicopter on Tuesday afternoon.

The hiker’s name has not been released.
