WASHINGTON (AP) - Former Summit County Councilman Pete Crossland has won the Democratic primary in Ohio’s 16th Congressional District, in a bid to unseat two-time U.S. Rep. Jim Renacci (reh-NAY’-see) this fall.
Crossland, who will be 77 when a new session of the House begins, defeated political newcomer James Donenwirth, a Cleveland businessman, in the northeast Ohio district.
Renacci was unopposed in the GOP primary.
Crossland has been critical in particular of Renacci’s vote last fall against raising the debt ceiling, which resulted in a government shutdown. Renacci has said he refused to “bankrupt” the country.
Renacci has defeated well-funded Democratic incumbents in two previous House contests.
