ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) - A building at the National Institutes of Health has been renamed after a former Illinois congressman.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1icvLjf ) the John Edward Porter Neuroscience Research Center in Bethesda, Maryland was dedicated after the Republican who spent more than two decades representing northern Illinois.
It’s now home to scientists in a variety of disciplines who are studying the brain.
The 78-year-old says he’s “gratified” the building bears his name, but says what’s more important is the work going on inside.
When he was in Congress, Porter was on a congressional subcommittee that controlled funding for the NIH. He’s now the chairman of Research!America, a health research advocacy group.
Porter was replaced by his staff member, Mark Kirk after he left office. Kirk is now a U.S. senator.
