OREGON CITY, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon man who killed his two pet dogs with an ax has been sentenced to 60 days in jail.
The Oregonian reports (https://is.gd/cqcBqw ) that Japheth Stalcup of Eagle Creek initially said he found the bodies of his family’s dogs on Nov. 15, 2012, in woods near his rural home.
Eventually, Stalcup admitted he killed the animals, telling investigators he couldn’t afford to care for the dogs and had no alternative. A prosecutor said Stalcup had adopted another dog through Clackamas County Dog Services and later returned the animal, so he knew he had that option.
Stalcup pleaded guilty to two animal abuse counts.
Clackamas County Presiding Judge Robert Herndon said Friday that killing the dogs showed “incredible stupidity and a lack of sensitivity to another living being.” The judge prohibited Stalcup from owning any domestic animals for 15 years.
