SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Legislature could vote on a bill to fund $1 billion in new transportation projects as one of its last tasks this session.

A Senate committee late Friday approved a capital construction bill to fund what transportation Secretary Ann Schneider calls “shovel ready” road and bridge projects across the state.

The House passed the legislation Thursday.

The capital construction plan would be funded with money from a prior capital plan and then by paying back the loan with revenue from retired bonds.

Schneider says construction can start as early as this summer if the bill is approved.

The Legislature is scheduled to adjourn Saturday.
