SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Senate Republicans are calling on majority Democrats to pledge they won’t extend Illinois’ temporary income tax increase after the November election.
Sen. Christine Radogno (rah-DOH’-nyoh) is Senate GOP leader. She says Democrats are preparing a repeat of 2011, when they raised Illinois’ individual income tax by 67 percent after the fall election.
Radogno says: “We’ve seen this playbook before. I have no doubt that they’re willing to do this again.”
The Senate is expected to send a 2015 budget to Gov. Pat Quinn on Friday. It was drafted after House Democrats couldn’t find the votes in an election year to make the temporary income tax hike permanent.
Lawmakers acknowledge they’ll need to return in January to consider approving new revenue to avert layoffs and growing the state’s bill backlog.
