NAVARRE BEACH, Fla. (AP) - The body of a missing Louisiana swimmer has been recovered off a Florida Panhandle beach.

Officials say the body of 21-year-old Nathan Hughey of Pineville, Louisiana, was found about 35 feet offshore Thursday. He went missing on Wednesday afternoon while swimming with his sister in the rough Gulf of Mexico surf.

The Pensacola News Journal (https://on.pnj.com/1mPa1Lu ) reports the pair got caught in strong currents, but a lifeguard was able to help his sister to shore.

Hughey was swept further into the water. Dangerous conditions made it impossible for rescuers to reach him. The U.S. Coast Guard deployed a helicopter, diver and boats but the search was called off at nightfall.

Navarre Beach Fire Chief Michael Howard says red flags were flying warning beachgoers of rough surf when Hughey went missing.
