ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - An auction of art and furniture owned by a late northern Indiana man who left $150 million to the Elkhart County Community Foundation has raised another $220,000 for nonprofit groups.
More than 200 people gathered at Elkhart’s Lerner Theatre to bid Thursday night on 27 items from businessman David Gundlach’s personal collection of art and unique furniture.
The winning bidders will work with the Elkhart County Community Foundation to direct the auction’s proceeds to local charities of their choice. The foundation agreed to match the gifts by 25 percent up to $25,000.
Foundation President Pete McCown tells The Elkhart Truth (https://bit.ly/1o75Eei ) the group is holding onto about 15 to 20 pieces from Gundlach’s collection because of their personal significance to Gundlach, who died in 2011 at age 56.
