MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - President Barack Obama has declared a major disaster in Alabama and ordered federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in areas affected by severe weather this week.

A statement released Friday by the White House says federal funding will be available to affected individuals in Baldwin, Jefferson, Lee, and Limestone counties. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency says damage surveys are continuing and more counties and additional assistance may be designated after the assessments are completed.

Gov. Robert Bentley had written a letter to the president requesting an expedited major disaster declaration for Alabama because of tornadoes and flooding.
