BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is warning Bismarck residents about an ongoing jury duty scam.

Stenehjem says callers pretending to be with the Burleigh County Sheriff’s office are threatening people with false accusations that they didn’t appear in court for jury duty and now face jail time.

Callers ask victims to get two Green Dot Money Pak cards in amounts less than $500 each. The callers then force the victims to provide them the cards’ codes to transfer the money.

Stenehjem says there has been at least one victim who paid $1,000. He says no law enforcement agency would ever call residents and threaten them for missing jury duty.

The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division can be reached at 701-328-3404 for more information about this and other scams.
