BRATTLEBORO, Vt. (AP) - Vermont State Police have turned over their investigation into the fatal hotel shooting of a man by a police officer to the state Attorney General’s Office and the Bennington County State’s Attorney’s Office.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports (https://bit.ly/1bI41RH) both agencies will independently review the report and can file charges if they find the shooting was unjustified.

State police say Mark Carignan of the Brattleboro Police Department shot 35-year-old Michael Santiago of Brattleboro on April 4 as he and other officers executed a search warrant for drugs at a hotel.

As officers entered, police say Carignan fired his weapon, hitting Santiago. He died at the scene.

Carignan has been with the department since 2002.
