Miami Heat player and former Duke standout Shane Battier was approached by Democrats for a possible Senate run in Michigan, according to news reports.
The information came to light in a Grantland report, which cited Mr. Battier himself, but the state party appeared to be unaware of any such offer.
Group spokesman Josh Pugh told the New York Daily News they are “united behind a great candidate in Congressman Gary Peters, and we wish Battier the best in his impending retirement form basketball.”
Mr. Battier is a Michigan native.
Mr. Peters is hoping to box out Republican opponent Terri Lynn Land in the race to fill the seat left by Sen. Carl Levin, Michigan Democrat.
