PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - A federal court security officer is in critical condition after being hit by a public bus while on duty in downtown Providence.

U.S. Marshal Jamie Hainsworth said 69-year-old Frank McKnight was crossing a street around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday between the federal courthouse and a federal building on Kennedy Plaza when he was struck by a RIPTA bus.

Hainsworth said McKnight is in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

He said McKnight, a retired North Kingstown police lieutenant, has been a court security officer for 13 years.

Hainsworth expressed thanks for “the outpouring of support and concern” for McKnight and said, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and his family.”

Many streets were shut down and buses from the transit hub at Kennedy Plaza were diverted during the accident investigation.
