RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Richmond Mayor Dwight C. Jones has temporarily withdrawn his plan to build a minor-league baseball stadium in a neighborhood that was once a major slave-trading hub.
Mayoral spokeswoman Tammy Hawley says Jones pulled the plan a few hours before it was to go before the City Council on Tuesday night. The Richmond Times-Dispatch (https://bit.ly/1oGWne1) reports most council members indicated they planned to vote against the proposal.
Jones says the proposal isn’t dead “because we believe in the plan.”
The stadium for the Richmond Flying Squirrels was proposed as part of a development that would include a slavery museum, hotel and apartments in the city’s historic Shockoe Bottom district.
Some opponents feared the construction would hamper future efforts to uncover remnants of the slave trade beneath generations of development.
