PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - For about 950 Oregon soldiers getting ready to deploy, President Barack Obama’s announcement about troops in Afghanistan means they may not be home by Christmas.

The Oregonian reports (https://bit.ly/1rhyZYU) the Oregon National Guard troops are now likely to be in Afghanistan until late next spring.

Obama said Tuesday he would order a contingency force of 9,800 U.S. troops to stay in Afghanistan past the end of the year

Nearly 600 Oregon troops are in Idaho training for deployment. The total contingent is expected to leave the Northwest next month for Texas and then on to Afghanistan.

Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden and the state’s highest-ranking military officer, Maj. Gen. Daniel Hokanson, went to Gowen field and Orchard Combat Training Center south of Boise Tuesday to visit the troops.
