HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Gene Walters, who served as sheriff of Forrest County from 1968 until 1992, has died at his home in Petal. He was 86.
Officials with Hulett-Winstead Funeral Home in Hattiesburg say Walters died Monday. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
The cause of death was not released.
A World War II veteran, Walters joined the sheriff’s department in 1959 after eight years with the Hattiesburg Police Department. He was elected sheriff in 1967.
Survivors include his wife, Sue; two daughters, a step-son, a brother, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
