LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe says Maya Angelou drew from her troubled and painful childhood to write books and poems that have inspired countless people.
Angelou, who moved back and forth between Stamps, Arkansas, and San Francisco as a child, died Wednesday. She was 86.
She gained acclaim for her first book, her autobiography “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” making her one of the first African-American women to write a best-seller.
Beebe says Angelou showed how strength, determination and honestly can take people to the heights of greatness.
