MILWAUKEE (AP) - Federal and local authorities have been sweeping through Milwaukee County to verify the residences of registered sex offenders.
The U.S. Marshals Service says “Operation Grand Slam” was an eight-week program conducted from late March to late May.
Investigators made one or multiple visits to verify the residences of 1,449 offenders on the state registry. Agents were able to verify 969 residences, or two-thirds.
U.S. Marshal Kevin Carr said Wednesday the remaining offenders may have been at work or at other legitimate location when agents knocked on their doors. He says agencies including the police and sheriff’s departments will continue to follow up at those homes.
He says any offenders confirmed not to live where they’re supposed to will be further investigated.
