LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County authorities have identified a 23-year-old man killed by sheriff’s deputies after he shot a deputy in the stomach during a confrontation.

Coroner’s Lt. Larry Dietz tells City News Service that Noel Aguilar died Monday following a chase in Long Beach.

The deputy, a seven-year department veteran, is in stable condition early Tuesday following surgery, and is expected to survive. A second deputy suffered minor injuries.

Authorities say Aguilar tried to reach for one of the deputies’ guns as they apprehended him after he fled during a traffic stop.

The shooting is under investigation.

Investigators say Aguilar was carrying a semi-automatic firearm.
