BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont authorities say the mother of a 14-month-old boy will face a second-degree murder charge in his death, which came less than an hour after a visit to their home by a state social worker.

Twenty-eight-year-old Nytosha LaForce, the mother of Peighton Geraw, has been held on an unrelated probation violation since shortly after the baby’s death April 4. She’s to be arraigned Wednesday.

Vermont Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Stephen Shapiro said the child died from bleeding inside his head.

Staff at the Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital reported signs of child abuse to the state Department for Children and Families after examining Peighton on April 2. DCF has been under investigation for its handling of the case.
