ELKINS, W.Va. (AP) - Former Barbour County Sheriff John Hawkins is scheduled to be sentenced June 11 on a mail fraud charge.
Hawkins resigned in February after he pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Elkins. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a maximum $250,000 fine.
Federal prosecutors say Hawkins staged an automobile accident in April 2013 to receive an insurance payment of nearly $8,300. He used his office email account to communicate with an insurer about the claim, which was paid.
