SPRINGFIELD (AP) - Senate President John Cullerton says lawmakers will have to hold a vote on extending Illinois’ temporary income tax hike or find another source of revenue after the November election.
Cullerton spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday as the Illinois Legislature is moving forward with a scaled-back 2015 budget.
Cullerton and other Democrats, including Gov. Pat Quinn, have pushed for making Illinois’ temporary income tax increase permanent.
But House Speaker Michael Madigan said he didn’t have enough “yes” votes in his chamber, where all members face re-election in November.
Without the tax extension lawmakers are considering a roughly $35 billion budget they acknowledge won’t cover the state’s costs. It could lead to layoffs and delays in paying bills.
Cullerton says various revenue options will be “on the table” after the election.
