RIPLEY, Miss. (AP) - A former Tippah County constable died when the ATV he was driving was struck by a vehicle Sunday afternoon.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports that 93-year-old Leroy Derrick was trying to cross Mississippi 4 when he drove his Honda Rancher all-terrain vehicle into the path of an oncoming GMC Acadia. The location is near the Hatchie River in southeastern Tippah County, east of Ripley.

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reports that Derrick died at the scene. The driver of the Acadia was not injured.



Derrick served as Tippah County constable for several years before retiring.
