LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Las Vegas police sergeant is being honored this weekend by the National Latino Peace Officers Association during a convention in Las Vegas.

Sgt. Cindy Rodriguez is due to receive the organization’s “Latina of the Year Award” during the conference awards and installation banquet Saturday evening at the Tropicana resort.

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto is scheduled to be the event keynote speaker.

Officials say Rodriguez was picked from candidates nationwide.

She’s seen as a role model for other women seeking law enforcement careers, and was selected for using personal time to mentor and train other officers with leadership classes that have helped prepare them for promotion.

The National Latino Peace Officers Association has been meeting annually since its first convention in Visalia, California, in 1974.
