PORT JERVIS, N.Y. (AP) - An Orange County man has been sentenced to a total of 50 years to life in prison for slashing his girlfriend’s throat then setting a fire to cover up the killing.

The Times Herald-Record of Middletown (https://bit.ly/So8dyA ) reports that 39-year-old David Stevenson was sentenced Thursday in Orange County Court for second-degree murder, arson and weapons possession.

Stevenson was accused of slashing 35-year-old TyRochelle Haughton’s throat in the shower on in January 2013 in Port Jervis, about 60 miles northwest of New York City. He then set fire to the house they shared and suffered severe burns.

Haughton’s sister, who now cares for Haughton’s four children, spoke at the sentencing. She said the children have battled depression since losing their mom.
