WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis. (AP) - A special prosecutor says she’s not charging the Wisconsin Rapids mayor with violating election laws because there was no criminal intent.
Wisconsin Rapids Mayor Zach Vruwink (VROO’-wink) posted online a picture of his ballot in the primary for his re-election in February, but took it down immediately after learning it was a crime.
Special prosecutor Lyndsey Boon Brunette tells Daily Tribune Media (https://wrtnews.co/1lVVlYV ) she didn’t find enough prosecutorial merit to move forward with the case as a felony. She says criminal intent is required by the statute and she didn’t see any.
Vruwink’s challenger at the time, Steve Abrahamson, said he is disappointed, but not surprised, by the decision.
Vruwink says he has decided not to comment further on the issue.
