GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island man who spent 17 years in prison after his parents were killed says he’ll work to free prisoners who were wrongly convicted.
Martin Tankleff was freed in 2007 after an appeals court found key evidence in his trial was overlooked. Prosecutors ultimately decided against a new trial.
Newsday (https://nwsdy.li/SmxJ7l ) reports that he’ll graduate from law school on Sunday. He currently works as a legal assistant in Garden City.
He told the newspaper Wednesday that he wants to make sure what happened to him doesn’t happen to anyone else.
He says the system has “too many innocent men incarcerated.”
In September, he’ll become executive director of his new foundation, yet to be named.
