WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A Florida appeals court has ruled that the ashes of a 23-year-old man killed in a 2010 crash with Wellington polo mogul John Goodman cannot be divided among family members.
The 4th District Court of Appeal decided Wednesday that Florida law does not allow human remains, even cremated remains, to be treated like property. The judges said the Legislature must make such a change.
The Palm Beach Post reports (https://bit.ly/1jVgTlL ) that William Wilson wanted to divide his son Scott’s ashes so he could take some to a family plot in Georgia. The man’s mother, Lili Wilson, wanted to bury his remains in Palm Beach County.
Goodman is awaiting a new trial after his initial DUI manslaughter and failure to render aid convictions were overturned due to juror misconduct.
