BOISE, Idaho (AP) - Lawrence Wasden, Idaho’s longest-serving attorney general, defeated challenger C.T. “Chris” Troupis in Tuesday’s Republican primary election.
Wasden is seeking his fourth term in office. He has said he would continue to fight to protect Idaho’s sovereignty and water rights, and to combat fraud.
Troupis, a tea party favorite, had said his main focus if he won the general election would have been to pursue securing full control of Idaho’s federally managed public lands.
“We’re very pleased,” Wasden said in a phone interview Tuesday night. “Officially, there are still votes to come in but we’re feeling confident. We conveyed a positive message to the voters and they responded.”
Wasden will face Democrat Bruce Bristline in November. Bristline ran unopposed in the Democratic primary.
As attorney general, Wasden serves as the state’s chief legal officer and offers consumer protection advice. The office also provides legal opinions to state lawmakers on pending legislation as well as to statewide elected officials if they have a question on the law.
The attorney general is also a member of the Idaho Land Board. The board is made up of the attorney general, governor, superintendent of public instruction, state controller and secretary of state. The panel is in charge of managing Idaho’s 2.5 million acres of endowment land to reap the highest long-term financial returns.
