ATLANTA (AP) - U.S. Rep. David Scott has defeated a Democrat primary challenger, virtually assuring his re-election to a seventh term in Congress.
Scott of Riverdale faced Michael Owens, an information technology executive from Mableton, in the Democratic primary election Tuesday in Georgia’s 13th Congressional District. Scott had 82 percent of the vote according to unofficial election returns, with 87 percent of precincts reporting.
Scott’s district covers southwestern portions of metro Atlanta. After his primary victory, he should get to coast through November. No Republicans signed up to run in Scott’s heavily Democratic district.
Scott enjoyed a huge financial advantage in the primary race. Scott raised more than $610,000 to defend his seat. Owens raised less than $35,000.
