MAGNOLIA, Miss. (AP) - Magnolia voters will go to the polls on July 1 to elect a new mayor to replace Melvin Harris, who resigned last month.

The Enterprise-Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1qSJH8f ) the board of aldermen in a special meeting Tuesday formally accepted Harris’ resignation, setting up a 45-day countdown to elect a new mayor.

Candidates have until June 11 to file qualifying papers.



Absentee voting will be held at city hall on June 21 and June 28. The deadline to vote absentee by mail is June 30.

A runoff, if needed, will be held July 15.

Harris, a former longtime alderman, became mayor in 2008 after winning a special election. He was elected to his first full term in 2009 and re-elected last year.
