AMES, Iowa (AP) - Heavy rain has flooded some county roads and city streets in parts of Story County.
The Des Moines Register reports (https://dmreg.co/1jCtlN2 ) that nearly 3 inches of rain fell between 7 and 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Ames airport.
Jim Lee of the National Weather Service says 3 inches in an hour isn’t uncommon in Iowa. But Lee also says the last couple of years have been dry, so such heavy rain hasn’t been seen in a while.
The downpour forced law enforcement officers to close some roadways.
The weather service also says hail 2 inches in diameter was reported in the Dubuque area on Tuesday.
