ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A section of the Erie Canal in central New York has reopened but other stretches of the state canal system remain closed because of high water.
The state Canal Corp. says Tuesday that the Erie Canal from Lock E-17 at Little Falls in Herkimer County to Oneida Lake has reopened.
Heavy rains last week caused flooding that raised water levels throughout the waterways, forcing the state to close about half of the 524-mile canal system.
Sections of the system that remain closed include the Erie Canal from Lock E-7 in Niskayuna in Schenectady County to Lock E-17, Lock E-32 at Pittsford to the Genesee River near Rochester, and the Cayuga-Seneca and Oswego canals.
The Erie Canal from Lock E-7 to Lock E-17 and the Rochester-area stretch are scheduled to reopen Wednesday morning.
