SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) - Ollie Tyler, the first African American woman to serve as superintendent of Caddo Parish Schools and interim state education superintendent, says she is running to be Shreveport’s next mayor.

The Times reports (https://bit.ly/1gj7rgT ) Tyler officially announced her candidacy during a press conference. The announcement follows months of speculation about whether Tyler would run for the seat currently held by term-limited Mayor Cedric Glover.

Citing a possible conflict of interest, Tyler stepped down last week from her seat as president of Step Forward, an education-centered nonprofit she formed under the Community Foundation’s umbrella.

Tyler joins a candidate field that includes fellow Democrats, state Reps. Roy Burrell and Patrick Williams. Burrell unofficially announced his candidacy in April but said he would officially announce this month.
