NEW YORK (AP) - The Metropolitan Museum of Art wants to redesign its modern and contemporary art wing to create new galleries for the expanding collection.
The Lila Acheson (ACH’-uh-suhn) Wallace Wing was completed in 1987. It’s located in the southwest corner of the museum.
One goal is to create an appropriate home for 79 Cubist paintings, drawings and sculptures. Cosmetics tycoon Leonard Lauder donated them last year.
Met Director Thomas Campbell says Lauder’s collection is “a huge missing link” between its strong impressionist and post-impressionist art and its “moderately strong” early-20th century holdings.
Campbell tells The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1oaJ6KB ) an improved space could attract even more donated art.
He envisions the new wing being completed by 2020, the museum’s 150th anniversary.
No cost estimate has been given for the proposal.
