NORWICH, Conn. (AP) - The Norwich City Counil has voted against borrowing money for a new refrigeration system at the city’s ice rink, a move that will lead to the rink’s closure at the end of June.
The Norwich Bulletin reports (https://bit.ly/1nbnQXU ) the council voted 5-2 against the $680,000 bonding proposal.
Council members say they want to instead review proposals from three private groups who have offered to take over the rink.
But council member Peter Desualniers, the chariman of the Ice Rink Authority, says the bonding approval was needed to keep the process moving and keep the rink open in the interim. A temporary chiller is scheduled to be disconnected June 30.
Norwich Figure Skating Club President Karen Hansen says her organization will be dissolving, and called the council’s vote “heartbreaking.”
