CHICAGO (AP) - Authorities in Chicago are investigating the mother of a 3-year-old girl who died from child abuse.

Karen Hawkins of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Service says the office is conducting the investigation following the death of 3-year-old Ashley Mendoza. The girl’s body was found Sunday night at a home on the city’s northwest side.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office ruled Ashley’s death a homicide after an autopsy revealed she had multiple injuries. Hawkins says there were no prior reports to the agency about the family and there were no other children in the home.

Police say a relative has been arrested, but would not elaborate because the charges against the person are pending.
