ERIE, Pa. (AP) - A man who pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $422,000 from a northwestern Pennsylvania animal shelter and one of his private clients has been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison.

Forty-nine-year-old Richard Danz of Matthews, North Carolina pleaded guilty in April 2013 to stealing money from the Elk County Humane Society in St. Mary’s, where he volunteered as an accountant and treasurer until June 2012. Authorities said he then stole from a private accounting client to cover up the shelter thefts.

The Erie Times-News (https://bit.ly/1qRpDmt ) reports that Danz apologized Monday in Erie County Court, saying “My heart is contrite.” But U.S. Attorney Christian Trabold said he acted out of “personal greed” and hasn’t paid anything back. The judge ordered nearly $420,000 restitution and forfeiture of an expensive car.
