SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Authorities in San Francisco say four homes were damaged and three people were hospitalized following an early morning three-alarm fire.

The fire began shortly after 6:30 a.m. Friday in the city’s Oceanview neighborhood near the Daly City border. Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White says the roughly 90 firefighters called in to battle the blaze had to contend with heavy smoke and fog.

The fire spread quickly because there was no space between the houses. Hayes-White says a man and a woman suffered smoke inhalation and a firefighter experiencing chest pains were taken to a hospital as a precaution.

The American Red Cross says 21 adults and a child were displaced as a result of the blaze. Two dogs were also found dead.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
