NORTH BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Railway is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, and some people have been taking rides along part of the original route.

Over 700 people took part in a round trip around the Manchester area on Saturday.

The Bennington Banner reports (https://bit.ly/1juRhSp) the Vermont Railway started servicing over 125 miles of former Rutland Railway track from Burlington to White Creek, New York, in 1964. That included 4 ½ miles between North Bennington and the Bennington Station.

The station was closed in the 1970s, but was restored for public meetings.

The ride was part of a series of free rides being offered across the state this year.
