Thibodaux may seek sales tax increase

THIBODAUX, La. (AP) - Thibodaux Mayor Tommy Eschete says the city may ask voters for a sales tax increase to help balance the budget.

The city’s 2014 budget projects spending $35 million, up about 22 percent compared to last year. Meanwhile, revenue is estimated at $23.3 million, down by about 6 percent. Grants, reserve money and borrowing are balancing the budget.

As soon as the city gets its 2013 audit, which Eschete expects to come within the next month, the city will kick off talks about its 2015 budget.

Eschete tells The Courier (https://bit.ly/1n9ucHm ) a decision will have to be made soon to cut services or increase revenue.
