RED BLUFF, Calif. (AP) - Sheriff’s officials are asking anyone in the vicinity of a Northern California trailhead around the time two men were robbed and shot there to contact investigators.

The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office has released a description of the suspect in Friday’s attack, but has so far not been able to identify him. Lt. Yvette Borden said on Monday deputies were also checking local businesses to see if they had any contact with the man.

Sixty-nine-year-old Francis Patrick Gregory and a 76-year-old friend were on the Iron Canyon Trail north of Red Bluff between 11:30 a.m. and noon on Friday when the suspect robbed and shot them.

Gregory, of West Tisbury, Massachusetts, died at the scene. His friend was taken to a hospital, where he was in critical but stable condition.

Sheriff’s officials say they are not going to identify him for his safety.
